ParkApps NE Ohio is an educational application designed collaboratively by technologists, educators, and scientists affiliated with Kent State University, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and Cleveland Metroparks, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (#1422764). This complimentary tool aims to enrich park visitors' experiences in Northeast Ohio by providing engaging scientific content. It offers an experience akin to having a park ranger accompany you through the stunning ecosystems of both Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Cleveland Metroparks.

While ParkApps includes a conventional interactive map featuring points of interest—where users can access descriptions, images, and amenities—its true value lies beyond mere navigation. It serves as a platform for informal science education within the park environment. Noteworthy features include “Adventure Tracks,” allowing visitors to delve deeper into specific trails. For instance, a hike along the Ledges Trail provides insights on “life on the ledges,” whereas a stroll through Beaver Marsh offers ecological information relevant to marsh ecosystems.

The app encourages users to engage with their surroundings thoughtfully; it utilizes geofenced notifications to alert users as they enter noteworthy areas. This approach promotes stepping aside from the trail to explore educational content interactively. By presenting questions related to scientific topics, ParkApps fosters a hands-on learning experience. Upon completion of each adventure track, participants are awarded digital badges as incentives.

Additionally, visitors can discover hidden "easter eggs"—unique informational content accessible only upon entering certain geofenced areas. For those in need of hints, assistance is conveniently available by tweeting @appsforparks.

Users are also empowered to curate their personal maps of favorite spots within the parks. They can document locations, add descriptions, and save photographic memories. Future updates are expected to enable the sharing of these curated points of interest with other users.

This initial release sets the stage for subsequent iterations that will introduce identification features aimed at enhancing knowledge about local flora and fauna and new citizen science projects that invite public participation in ongoing research efforts within the parks.

For individuals with limited mobility, ParkApps acknowledges that certain beautiful areas within national, state, and local parks may be less accessible due to trail terrain. While walking trails is encouraged for those able, the app’s comprehensive pictures and descriptions allow those with mobility challenges to virtually participate in outdoor experiences.

Please note that an initial internet connection is required to download essential content; users can subsequently access information offline while within the park's confines. New content will sync automatically when the device is reconnected online.
